Kindle struggling to make it as an educational device

University lectureTablets have been long been touted as replacement for books the classrooms of the future. And although the iPad is getting a good wrap as an educational device, the Kindle isn’t doing as well as educators and Amazon had originally hoped.

The Darden Business School at the University of Virginia is nearing the end of its Kindle test run. Already, the school is concluding that although students take well to Amazon’s ebook reader for casual reading, when it comes to classroom learning, the Kindle is a lot less popular.

Darden is one of a handful of schools to test the Kindle DX in classrooms. Findings in other schools seem to be tilting in the same direction. Arizona State University recently completed its own pilot program for the DX, the results just as unflattering. Princeton was also unimpressed in its own Kindle test. In an interview with the Daily Princetonian, one student described the device as “poor excuse of an academic tool”.
