The NYT (New York Times) recently reported that Google’s looking to get into the tablet game. Nothing new there except that according to the NYT’s report, the tablet will be based upon the Android operating system rather than the upcoming Chrome OS.
The report goes on to state that sources with ‘direct knowledge’ have reported that Google has been in talks with publishers, although how they will make the Android OS work with eBooks may well be a puzzle in itself.
NYT have also reported that HP will be building a second, smaller, tablet device (the first being the Slate) with a tiny 6″ screen, appropriately nicknamed the ‘half-pint’. This device will also run the Android OS, slightly surprising given the OS’s poor web browsing capabilities and phone based functionality.
Hopefully before these devices launch Google will release a new tablet specific version of Android, otherwise both these devices may struggle to gain market share.
