Google removes console emulators from Android Market

Android gamers will be disappointed to hear that Google has decided to remove a number of popular console emulators from the Android Market over the weekend. These popular apps within the gaming community were designed to emulated gaming systems like the Playstation or Super Nintendo. This would allow users to play classic games on their Android devices.

The developer of these apps, Yong Zhang commented on the issue in an Engadget post saying that Google not only removed the Apps without warning but also revoked his developer privileges. I can imagine this is not sitting well with that developer as this was his primary source of income and many of the pulled emulators were some of the most popular paid apps on the Android Market.

Google’s move was not without reason however, apparently receiving a complaint from Sega in February. An other developer was offered the same treatment last month when his app, a PlayStation emulator was pulled and his developer privileges stripped. While fans might be in arms about this, game emulators aren’t exactly legal as they facilitate the the distribution of pirated video games.

What do you think? Was Google right in removing these apps from the Market? More importantly, were they too harsh on the developers by revoking their ability publish other apps on the Android Market?
