According to a new study of Internet traffic released by comScore in the US, Apple’s iPad effectively owns the tablet market. The iPad, which was first released just over a year ago counts for a staggering 97 percent of tablet device internet traffic in the US and 89 percent globally. Amazingly, it accounts for 22 percent of non-PC traffic in the US. Turning to Android, we see that leaves them with very little. Only 2 percent of US tablet internet use comes from Google mobile OS.
Although it’s clear to all that Apple needs to keep a close eye on its competitors, other information points to prolonged iPad dominance for many years to come. Recent analysis by Gartner shows the iPad will continue to dominate this space well into 2015. As Android continues to refine itself and become more familiar to consumers, it will steadily take a bigger slice of the tablet market share.
As for the tablet market as a whole, Gartner forecasts a boom in 2011 with overall sales of tablet devices more than tripling over 2010. This growth will continue through 2015, tablet sales reaching just under 300 million worldwide according to Gartner.
