For those who don’t remember, the Surface was Microsoft’s revolutionary new device that was announced in May 2007, nearly three years ago, after over six years on ongoing development. The Courier on the other hand is Microsoft’s response to the rise in popularity of touch, in particular, tablet devices, hopefully due out by the end of 2010.
Microsoft haven’t fared too well in the past with their touch screen endeavours, the Surface is, by all accounts, something like a space-age table, the main problem being that it costs close to $15,000 for the developer version, making it an expensive experiment if anything goes wrong or it doesn’t live up to expectations.
So will the Courier canabalise the Surface’s potential market? Is it sustainable for microsoft to have one large and one larger device on the market? Whilst one popular tech company are trying something similar, if only in a more affordable price range, only time will tell if the courier will go the road of its under-used older brother or manage to scale the dizzying heights of device stardom.
